hm, thought provoking tho i think the answer is fairly clear. When Adam and Eve first set their foot on earth, there were no prophets just yet and therefore no religions that forbid premarital sex, also there were no communities that forbid premarital sex (because there were the only 2 human beings on earth).
With no laws around, they can pretty much do whatever they want. Then as the time goes by (we talkin' thousand of years here) communities were created everywhere, and prophets were "born"... laws were created for the better of everybody and I believe one of them was... no sex until after you get married. And I believe the concept of "penghulu" exist after religions "passed" the law of marriage.
So, does the time line getting clearer now? :)
